Members of the Luray Garden Club participated in Ikebana floral design classes taught by Linda Lewis Taylor, master judge.
We gathered each Wednesday afternoon for 6 weeks to learn the principals of the Ohara School Japanese Flower arranging.
These designs emphasize line and visual balance while keeping the arrangement elegant with contrasting material. The dominate flower is placed where it gets the most attention,keeping material in scale ,one part with another and in proportion to the container.
Rhythm is very important ,as is maintaining the triangular essence of the line arrangement and integrating material and container.
The following photos are examples of Ikebana parallel designs which were created during Class #5.
Master Gardener, Paula Brownlee from Woodstock presented a program on dividing and transplanting herbs and vegetables from the garden for use during the winter months. She shared a variety of cuttings with members. The program was very informative and encouraged members to give it a try.]

Holiday Times Garden Show a Success
The Luray Garden Club’s Holiday Times Flower show held at the Luray Comer VFW was a great success according to Susan Phillips, club president and co-chair of the committee.
There were over 93 different entries in the combined horticulture and design exhibits
Judges from the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs from around the state praised the show.
The Horticulture Awards were presented to:
Gretchen Mulligan received the overall Horticulture Excellence Award. Two Award of Merit ribbons were presented to Lesley Mack. Arboreal Awards went to both Gretchen Mulligan and Lesley Mack
Design Exhibit Awards presented. The top award of Holiday Excellence was given to Lesley Mack for her lovely parallel design called Christmas Parade. The Designer’s Choice Award was presented to Lesley Mack and Lyn Neviaser.
The Educational Award was presented to Eleanor Ames, for her exhibit on Decking the Doors about creating your own holiday wreath.
